review 1: 3.5 stars, rounded up. This book has some themes which have been done rather often in M/M; The bodyguard falling for his younger charge; the dangerous stalker; The constant "We really shouldn't do this but we can't help ourselves" aspect to the relationship. But I enjoyed the writing style and characters enough to get past most of that. Iskander has an appealing POV voice, and Troy, for all that he's young and possibly in danger, is assertive and not a total victim. The military aspects felt natural, as if written from experience. The cop part unfortunately felt less expert, particularly at the showdown, given how experienced Iskander is supposed to be. Still, this is a light, fast read that does manage to avoid some overused angsty traps of this category of stories, and k... moreept me entertained during a couple of hours of down time.
review 2: Very Big SurpriseThis one started out a bit snarky--we don't really get to know or like either of the main characters, Iskander and Troy (whose names are oddly reminiscent of what historical conflicts the title implies). Iskander is a career Navy cop and Troy is the openly gay, sort of EMO style, college age son of the commander of the Virginia base whom the Admiral has manipulated Iskander to guard because the Admiral requested a gay cop who was not necessarily out.Got it?And both Iskander and Troy pretty much behave the way they are described above, annoying us at times with their self-centered, secretive ways around each other. Then, all of a sudden, the frost starts to melt and this one takes off, boom! Accidents, assaults, adventure and a lot of angst and pent-up-lust bring this one from a lull (took me three or four days to get a third of the way) to a high-speed chase (finished it in one sitting). less
