review 1: i'm so sorry to give this book two star out of five...but i can't give it more!!!!I WAS BORED OUT OF MY FREAKING MIND!!!!!!!! it took me 4 days to read it! i'm not lying nor exaggerating!!!scheduled like that, it was: pick book up, read 2-3 chapters, put book down, do something, contemplate book, do something else, pick book up read 2-3 chapters, put down, do something....i wanted to slap Karou multiple times! damn! the angel part was nice though! i like how the plot developped throughout the book. it was interesting! the writing is good but there are still lots of descriptions, still lots of flashback. at one point i even felt asleep! go me! one thing is sure, i DON'T want to re-read it again! sorry!
review 2: I had a really hard time with this book, which is
... more such a shame, considering how different and unique the plot is. I love the story, the characters are quirky enough to not be printed stereotypes (for the most part) - I love the mythology and the "hasn't been overdone" factor … but honestly, a solid 150 pages of this installment felt like it was completely irrelevant and dragged my enjoyment/interest level WAY down, which is why it took me so long to muddle through it. The rest of the book was fantastic and full of stomach turning twists and emotional upheavals that were leaps and bounds better than some of its YA counterparts - so it definitely deserves credit in that aspect. I just think it could have been edited with a little more reverence. The biggest problem with this book, overall, was the eye-rolling behavior on Madrigal/Karou's part - "he killed my people, I hate him forever, I tingle whenever he is near, I LOATE HIM SOB!" … yet Akiva killed her people in retaliation to the wrongs they committed against Madrigal/Karou before this war began …. so you just sort of want to slap her and tell her to buck up a bit (or as Wayne from Wayne's World would say, "GET THE NET!"). However, I also realize that we wouldn't have a trilogy if Madrigal/Karou didn't insist on being such a nitwit, but again … ugh. The back and forth of I LOVE HIM/I CAN'T DO THIS TO MY PEOPLE was wearisome to endure. One of the greatest talents in writing, to me, is when an author of one sex so convincingly writes from the point of view of the opposite sex that you could never guess that they weren't a biological representative of that gender (my go-to example here is Wally Lamb's beautiful and heartbreaking rendering of a victim of sexual assault in She's Come Undone, which was so profoundly and preciously done that I still, to this day, cannot believe Wally Lamb is a MAN) - I feel like this is definitely not one of Laini Taylor's strong suits. Akiva's point of view read like it was coming from an overemotional and clingy teenage girl. I find this to be a problem in a lot of YA books, in general - the want/need to pander directly to teen girls with this oversensitive and typically unrealistic portrayal of "the perfect man". Akiva was mopey and morose and full of over-stuffed and trying to be poignant inner dialogue about THE FUTURE and THE DREAMS as he mooned over Madrigal/Karou and prepared to sacrifice himself in the name of what he had done … you get me. A tale as old as time. Like, enough! I really do want to stress that I am enjoying the series and think that it is well done, and when Taylor focuses her writing more on storytelling and not emotion-pandering, she does it REALLY well. I absolutely encourage any fan of supernatural/fantasy/young adult literature to give it a try. As I like to reiterate, when reviewing YA, I was scarred emotionally by the drivel that was the Twilight series, and I get "the twilights" REALLY easily, so it is hard to impress me, in this aspect. Stronger writing from Akiva's POV and less unnecessary backstory building would have done WONDERS here. I'm giving it a 4 for the last 25% of the book alone, but a 3.5 is really more accurate. I do plan on eventually reading the third and final installment of the trilogy, but it will probably be awhile before I get there. less
