review 1: I love, love, LOVE Laini Taylor's writing. I am so glad that she decided to write this story, because Zuzana and Mik are some of my favorite characters. Taylor's writing is so realistic and descriptive, that even though it's magic and what not, it is all completely believable. But her imagery is what always stands out to me. Her writing is very similar to, and just as good as Markus Zusak. Good stuff!
review 2: As much as I love the Daughter of Smoke & Bone trilogy in it's entirety, my favorite aspect will always be Mik and Zuzana. This story is all about them, so of course it was brilliant. Laini Taylor's skill with language puts her in a class of her own--her sentences make me pause to analyze their beauty. I actually have to absorb her words, not just read t... morehem. And this story is full of these beautiful turns of phrase. I loved Zuzana's parts, because she's such a fun and spunky and deliciously rabid little fairy girl, but Mik. Oh, Mik. You melted my heart. Imagine if Amy and Rory Pond from Doctor Who had a story like this. You would know what Amy would say because she talks all the time. But Rory's chapters? Those would mean so much more because he's so quiet and reticent. This is what I felt during Mik's chapters--like I was getting to know him for the first time. And getting to know just how crazy in love he is with Zuzana. It was very sweet and it makes me think I would appreciate his character more in the books if I were to read them again. I was bummed, though, because the final note in Latin lacked all suspense for me because I took 4 years of Latin in high school. I would have loved for that to be as much as surprise for me as it was for Mik. Stupid...learning...Also, the poem with the peacock is Elimination Dance by Michael Ondaatje. I looked it up...figured it would save you some time in the future if you're as curious as I am. Librarian, to the rescue! (Also, it's a fun poem). less
