review 1: I managed to read the whole book. However, the beginning threw me because the story changed. If not for the story constantly changing directions and time periods, I do not think this would have held my interest. When a story becomes THAT utterly unbelievable I just cannot find it scary. There were a few good parts in the book but I was not pleased with it as a whole, found it more confusing than scary.
review 2: A let down. I was really looking forward to this but it couldn`t live up to the hype and the eye-patch Too many flashbacks where they are not needed, way too much info-dumping in the last 1/4 of the book but much too little real suspense or "horror". Some neat ideas to build up his own mythos but this book would really have benefited from some editi... moreng. Maybe his short work is better, less space and need to "over explain" the whole backstory. That kills any thrill really quick for me. Also, too much humour in the wrong places but not enough terror. And don`t get me wrong: I was not in it for chep bloody thrills but this was a really dull read that only gained some momentum in the last 50 pages. less
