review 1: A heady, hallucinatory, terrifying novel that mixes horror, noir, and the cosmic weird to astonishing results. Barron has always been an intelligent and unconventional horror writer, one who understands that atmosphere and only fleeting glimpses of the horrific are this genre's most powerful storytelling tools. In THE LIGHT IS THE DARKNESS, he has created a compelling network of characters and mysteries, a story where it's impossible to guess the truth behind the veil or anticipate what will happen next, all permeated by an indelible sense of mounting dread and a well developed, if entirely nihilistic, worldview. Readers of brainy, imaginative, sophisticated, sublime horror will want to pick up THE LIGHT IS THE DARKNESS at their soonest opportunity.
review 2: A
... morenother winner from Laird Barron. In this short novel, we meet a man named Conrad who fights to the death in clandestine, modern day gladiatorial contests sanctioned by some of the richest and most powerful people on the planet. The story follows his attempts to find his FBI agent sister, Imogene, who has gone missing while following the trail of a sinister doctor named Drake, the man who, years earlier, had been entrusted with saving the life of Conrad's terminally ill brother. This book, much like THE CRONING, unveils its secrets in layers, each one painting a larger picture of the horrors at work behind the scenes of everyday existence. Mr. Barron's stories incorporate the themes explored by H. P. Lovecraft in ways unlike any other writer working today. Highly recommended. less
