review 1: Although I'm not terribly fond of the book, I couldn't give it a rating lower than 4. Why? Because the world is interesting enough even if the characters are so-so. I can't put my finger on it but I just am not as riveted when reading the story. The story is mainly centered on Wraith and Serena. Wraith is the third incubus brother who is happy-go-lucky. He was tortured at a young age by vampires and spent his life killing them. He did not care whether he lived or died. Serena is an offspring of a charmed human. The charm was passed on to her by her mother and this meant that she is protected and immortal as long as she keeps her virginity intact. The problem is, Wraith was poisoned by Rogue's assassin and the only way to save his life is by taking Serena's charm/virginity. ... moreWraith agreed because the hospital is tied to his life-force. However, the more he got to know Serena, the more reluctant he became to complete his mission. He accompanied her on an archeology trip. She is looking for treasures that would tip the scales in favour of humans in the human vs. demon fight. He posed as an aegis agent and she took him at his word. Meanwhile, she is being stalked by a fallen angel, Byzamoth. He needs Serena to open the portal to heaven so that he can bring on Armageddon. He succeeded in taking the necklace, the piece of heaven when Wraith managed to chase him away. In an effort to protect the charm, Serena passed it onto Wraith, knowing that she would die but also knowing that she would save him, believing he had cancer. They hide out in an aegis stronghold where she discovered that Wraith is a demon. She is filled with regret and fury that she gave it up for Wraith. Byzamoth visited them again and this time, he was able to extract the blood of the charmed needed to open the passage way. They go back to Underworld General where Wraith begged his brothers to save Serena. By this time, her disease has incapacitated her. Meanwhile, he went on to face Byzamoth with Reaver's help because only an angel can kill an angel. He has to drain him dry in order to have that ability. It was a worst-case scenario though. Kynan joins them and volunteers instead, since he has angel blood on him. He dies and Gem weeps for him. Lore, revives him. Lore is the assassin sent to kill the three brothers in the event of Rogue's death. It turns out that he is another brother but he is under the rule of a demon. They talk to an angel who tells Kynan that he passed his trial. He tells Gem that she has a human soul because her father raped her mother. She tells Reaver he did well. Serena is still dying and Wraith begs the vampire council for her life. They agree on the condition that he withstand torture again. Serena is now a vampire and they conclude with Wraith meeting his son, that he beget with another woman. I'm not in love with the book but I certainly admire the world-building. I suppose if I am more invested in the characters I probably would love this. I like the idea of a very chaotic world. I loved the Fever series because I felt it in the writing. However, I seem to be detached when reading this. I just did not see the charm. Of course, whenever I read about a character screeching demons are evil, I just cringe a bit inside about their narrow-mindedness and this is coming from the main characters no less. I don't like the characters I suppose. Wraith is pretty tame for a wild boy persona. He isn't truly calculating. I found him to be quite caring actually. His deeds are understandable considering his past but I found him to be quite fragile. Serena is a charmed woman and is confident about her life. I did not like her because everything went her way and she did not expect bad things to happen to her. There wasn't much to recommend her and I found her to be quite boring. I'm still on the fence on Kynan and Gem. I'm glad they got back together but it just dragged on and on. I actually wanted Gem to embrace her demon side and be proud of who she is instead of the angel telling her she has a human soul. After all, what does it matter? If you are writing a story where the demons are not fully good or fully evil, what does it matter if you are human or demon? It is the actions you take that shapes whether you are good or you are evil. While I am awed by the complexity of the world building, I just am not gripped by the story or the characters enough. I don't wish that I hadn't read this book but it certainly is not one that you love. It is alright. It just felt like it could be more.
review 2: Another captivating book in the Demonica series that just keeps me wanting more. In this one we get the vampire incubus Wraith, who is injected with a rare poison and can only be saved if he gets a protective charm away from a woman. No problem, since to get the charm he just has to take her virginity. I mean, that's pretty much his specialty. But if she loses her charm she'll die, and Wraith falls in love with her...Unlike in the previous volume, I wasn't entirely sure how this would end well so I found it a lot more satisfying overall. The world continues to build and grow as it looks like the end of days may soon be upon us. Oh, and the sexy demon brothers find out they have another brother -- half human. I'm looking forward to his story. less
