review 1: Suspense, action, romance, alpha-heroes, intelligent and independent heroines - what's not to love? But I realised that each time I read a Laura Griffin book I end up feeling dissatisfied. The beginning is always promising and I can't even pinpoint where it goes from awesome to mediocore but it is just missing that spark that makes me fall in love with the characters and the romance. A better, more experienced reviewer would probably be able to pick up what exactly is not right, but I feel like the romance is never really a true romance and the characters don't really appeal to me the way they should. I mean I read a lot of Linda Howard, and her books are very similar to Laura Griffin's in theme, character and plot, but they always make me excited and I always melt inside a... moret the romance. I feel like the relationships in this book is neither developed properly or resolved properly; I get that this is a much more realistic view because real life is messy and there are no bow tied endings - but I do like to see a somewhat clear resolution in my novels. I had trouble believing in Fiona and Jacks love and I didn't like how the romance was developed; it was so very - oh god - UNromantic; and I didn't like Jack - he was insensitive and not at all charming. And Fiona...in a sense she is so very passive and it annoyed the hell out of me. In general I liked the book for the type of book it is but I really didn't like the characters or the romance.
review 2: Forensic artist Fiona Glass draws victims and criminals and sees them in her dreams. She wants to get out of the business and concentrate on her art. Jack Bowman, police chief of Greenville, Texas, convinces her to take one more case. He has a serial killer who is escalating; killing more often and getting more reckless. The story shifts between Fiona's life in Austin, an ongoing case in Georgia and the case in Greenville. Fiona is drawn deeper into Jack's case and it becomes personal. The 3 overlapping scenarios are handled well and you see several flawed characters at crossroads in their lives. Well done romantic suspense. less
