review 1: Amazing story told in Deep South vernacular about an abandoned little white girl struggling to discover who she is while being raised by a wealthy, eccentric grandmother she's never known in an old house filled with her doting black servants. I won't say more, but it's almost as if Flannery O'Connor had written The Help. NOT the same story, but of the same vein. This is a must-read! I'm waiting for it on the silver screen!
review 2: I thoroughly enjoyed this novel - set in the south during the summer of 1964. It was tenderly told - from the perspective of Ibby, a young girl, left by her mother to live with her grandmother - a grandmother that she hardly knows. Grandmother Fannie has a black cook and servant that have run her house FOREVER, and so ties in the
... moreracial tensions and frustrations of the south. The characters are strong, by the end of the book, you feel you are a part of their struggling, yet strong, family. Highly recommend. less
