review 1: What a fun, intelligent mystery! Theo is a creative, resourceful, stubborn heroine, and the mystery is reminiscent of The Mysterious Edge of the Heroic World as well as From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. I love the prominence libraries and research play in solving the mystery, and I enjoyed the cast of secondary characters. This is the Greenwich Village I always wanted to inhabit.
review 2: Thoroughly enjoyed this novel—the mystery and especially the wildly contrasting main characters. Theo's resourcefulness in stretching money and carrying on with very little has seldom been seen since the Great Depression and fascinates her luxuriously equipped and affluent but equally determined friend Bodhi. Together they apply low and high technol... moreogy to solve a complicated art mystery and save what's left of Theo's sense of family. I was fascinated by all the art history and background the author imparted along the way, most of it important to unraveling the mystery. The art education did distract me at times though, drawing attention to itself pulling me out of the story to digest something. This could could stretch young readers' patience. less
