review 1: I really enjoyed this series about Blessing but this ended up being my favorite. It was interesting to start to see a softer side of Mrs Valders; hopefully that continues. I also thought it was interesting that there was a lot more about Roald in this book again with Ingeborg thinking of him more often. I still really need to go back and reread the original series again after 10+ years becuase there is a lot I do not remember from them.
review 2: Rebecca Baard feels like an old maid now that she has graduated high school and the hoof and mouth disease diminished the milk that she would have used for her soda shop. She has been taking care of her older brother Gus out at their parents homestead and feels that she has no prospects of getting married because of
... more her two very protective brothers. She gets an invitation to go out to Bismark and visit her cousin Penny and Hjelmer and see how a bigger city runs a soda shop. She gets many great ideas and is also admired and called on by two young men. She learns to believe that their is nothing wrong with her in the looks department, but also finds that she compares every caller to Gerald Valders from home. After being homesick for a while she goes home to find that her brothers agreed to her courtship of the new store owner, Mr. Harlan Jeffers. He is a secretive man that gives everyone the creeps and doesn't run his store like Penny at all...it is dirty and unstocked. He tries to take advantage of Rebecca when she goes to inform him that she doesn't want to have him courting her and her brothers were wrong to take that direction. Thoriff saves her from the advances and with the help of other town members runs him out of town after signing over ownership to Thoriff of the store. Rebecca starts to manage the store until Penny and Hjelmer can move back. Gerald and all the town help get it cleaned up. Gerald decides that he can't marry Rebecca because his malaria will cause her grief in the longrun but decides that he too doesn't want to get hurt and the time together would be better than nothing. Rebecca says yes to the marriage and also starts her soda shop in the old dress shop. Again the town helps get everything ready for the grand opening...even Mrs. Valder's is more friendly. Haakan has a brain hemerage that causes his right side of his body to forget to function. He has to practice patience as he begins to get the strength back. Astrid begins training with Elizabeth to become a nurse. less
