review 1: I have chosen this book for my turn in my book club. The narrator grows up in a hippie-era commune. It will awaken memories for many of us. It dovetails nicely into a unintended collections of books that we have read that view the world from through the eyes of young children(A Death in the family, The painted House). The characters are complex but recognizable. It has characters that remind me of Cutting for Stone.
review 2: I really wanted to like this book as I was hoping to get an idea on how hippies really live. However, I found the story line to be boring. You know you've lost interest when you start reading and realize when you're about to turn the page that you've just daydreamed about something else and have no real concept of what you've just read..
... moreso..you have to read it over and over for the info to really "stick and comprehend".Yeah...the whole book was a big boring blur...Maybe I should have read it in piece and quiet and not on my noisy commute, but than again, if a story is truly great I find myself tuning out all the commuting noises and becoming really lost in a book. Nothing seemed to grab me......too bad. less

A must read if you've ever wondered about communes. Character driven, beautifully written.
