The main character is a boy named Barry. It was a normal day until they heard the storm warnings on the radio telling about a hurricane and for the people to take cover in the football stadium. so they packed and got on the road and drove there. family was driving to a shelter and there was bad traffic so they turned home and took shelter there. The hurricane started off with high winds that broke the levees and then the floods came so they went to their attic and Barry's dad found and picked up an axe and...HACHOPA,he made a hole so they co... moreuld get on the roof. Then they saw the damage the hurricane had really done......
review 2: Date: September 6th, 2014Author: Lauren TarshisTitle: I Survived Hurricane Katrina, 2005Plot: Barry Tucker and his family are evacuating the city of New Orleans. They received news on the radio stating that Hurricane Katrina was going to be one of the most intense hurricanes the city has seen in forty years. Stuck in traffic, Barry's baby sister Cleo isn't feeling well, so the family drives back home. What seems to be a normal hurricane, turns into a fight for survival for the Tucker family. Setting: New Orleans, LouisianaCharacters: Barry, Cleo, Jay, Abe, Cruz, Mom, Dad, CruzPoint-of-View: Third-PersonTheme: Survival, Friendship, Heroes, Strength, HopeStyle: Realistic-fiction, NarrativeCopyright: 2011Notes: I enjoyed this book just as much as I enjoyed the I Survived: September 11th story. This book would be great for boys in general as well as boys within the African-American population because the main character happens to be African-American, even though the book does not specify that; the illustrations however do so. I felt that two important themes for this book was survival and strength; those themes in my opinion are both universal and appealing to both male and female readers. less
