review 1: I began reading this with interest, since I generally love literary mysteries. Unfortunately, the disjointed plot and endless recitation of book titles took any suspense out of the mystery. I finished reading it, but in the end it had the same effect on me as many French movies, where the characters talk endlessly and dissect their emotional states. Suddenly, the author or director realizes that the book or movie needs to end, so an abrupt conclusion is tacked on, and the reader ends up thinking, "Now what was that all about?"
review 2: A novel about novels. What distinguishes a 'good' novel from a bad one? This book inspired me to start my own search for what novels I love. This book would definitely have to be included on this list. However if I could ... moregive one critique to this novel, it would be that the pace of the novel throughout is slow and steady, when in the last pages the novel seems to race to tie its story up with bow. All and all a good read. less
