review 1: Wonderful, literate story about literature-loving people who open a bookstore in Paris that sells only good literature, as defined by a select committee of authors and the owners of the bookstore. Characters are well-rounded with still enough mystery about them to keep you interested. Assorted ills befall them as pop-culture authors and publishers of literary dreck are jealous/outraged that their books are not carried at The Good Novel. A nice commentary on how we are so awash in dreck that things worth having/reading/knowing about are threatened with drowning, without being heavy-handed about the message.
review 2: I really wanted to like this a lot more than I did. The idea was great but the plot and navel-gazing by all the characters went on way too long. T
... moreres French? Oui. I was expected to be dazzled by references to the great well-known authors, but apparently in this novel world, they are almost entirely French and possibly a bit obscure. Yes, that is a good recipe for some folks, but I like to take a much broader view. If the 'great French novels' are all like this, I'll stick with the Russians, Africans, South American and other world lit writers I love, thanks very much. Except for Le Grand Meaulnes. I'm still trying to track down a copy of that! And it was not mentioned in this book. The author gives an attempted nod at non-French lit, but I think she just can't help orbiting back to her known sphere of authors. less
