review 1: I thought this novel would be a discourse on what it means to be human. Not really a spoiler—it’s in the dust jacket—a human/bonobo girl is taken to the US to be raised. Instead of that examination of human nature, it becomes a story of how she learns to become an American teenager—shopping, smart phones, etc. The adults act like idiots, the children wise way beyond their years. Then it becomes a thriller (chased by government agents, etc) that isn’t very thrilling.
review 2: This is a crazy bio-thriller about a girl who is a cross-breed between an ape and a human. Lucy has grown up in the forest with her father and her bonobo family, but ends up in a suburb of Chicago, going to high school. She realizes that if she doesn't keep her secret, she ... morecould be locked up and even killed.This is an intense, interesting book. Some parts really disturbed me, but that's on purpose. It's a great book to make you think about what it means to be a human and how we should treat those who are different from us. less
