review 1: The Hope factory I think was at places way too elaborative and the elaboration was not very immersive. Things expanded upon were not particularly adding to the book. Though the book follows a very typical theme of going from bad scenarios to good ones, it has been woven up well. The plot doesn't look very naive or superficial except at a few places towards the end. Some of the emotions the writer has tried to convey have gone up pretty well but a lot of them are blunt. Overall a so-so, not so good not so bad.
review 2: The Hope Factory is the parallel story of Anand, the owner of a car factory, and one of his servants Kamala, both of whom are at a crossroads of their life in an India that is rapidly changing. Anand is looking to expand his factory but in order
... moreto do so he realizes he might have to compromise his moral principles and engage in bribery and other political games, while Kamala is trying to maintain the little that she has and to provide a good education for her son Narayan but that might not be so simple with her constant money troubles. Lavanya Sankaran writes a novel of choices that individuals in different castes have to make in the face of a rapidly modernizing India. Development is a constant theme throughout the novel and how it affects the different castes. Sankaran gives us an understanding of why the different characters make the choices that they have made. Her engaging style makes us care about who these individuals are. Particularly effective is the points where she writes a scene from the perspective of Anand and his family then shows us the same scene from the perspectives of Kamala and the other servants. The point is that life isn't easy regardless of class. A strong debut from Sankaran, hopefully she maintains the promise of this novel in her future works. less
