review 1: A story set in Bangalore, comparing the moneyed with the poor, and centering around the owner of a factory, his family and servants. Some of the characters were a little one dimensional, for example, the rich wife who does nothing but shop and complain, and the very hard working, but moral servant who wants the best for her son, a bit more nuance would have been realistic. I also found some of the overly flowery descriptions a little annoying and distracting from the storyline. But overall, the writing and situations were interesting enough to make a compelling book.
review 2: This is a novel about modern day India. It centers on a man who is trying to expand his factory and the everyday lives of his family and servants. It's an intriguing look in to a country
... moreon the verge of developing. Not surprisingly, the politicians are just as corrupt as ours. I had a private laugh at how similar their big candidate Vijayan was to Barack Obama, even using the same catch phrases as he promises to help the little people while his cronies extort bribes from them in order to allow them to do business. Things aren't so different between us and the third world politically. Some of the terms used by characters are confusing if you're not Indian and they aren't explained, but overall I think this book gives the foreign reader a glimpse in to a mostly unknown culture. less
