review 1: Block's Matthew Scudder novels are a favorite of mine, even if I'm not a huge fan of short stories in general. I do love a good Lawrence Block story, which most are, so I gave this book a spin. "The Night and the Music" is one of the few short story collections that was satisfying from beginning to end. A few of these stories were more fun than many novels that get released these days. Great mysteries all.
review 2: Lawrence Block's wonderful unlicensed private investigator Matt Scudder is the subject of 17 novels and still going stoing. This book collects the short stories and novellas that have been written about this character. The stories retain a certain melancholy, we see Scudder before and after his sobriety and his brooding thoughts about psychology... more and society are always fascinating. The stories that stand out are "The Merciful Angel Of Death" where he investigates the reports of a woman who helps terminal AIDS patients ease out of pain and suffering forever. "Out the Window" is a classic "locked door" mystery where a woman apparently leaps to her death, but the evidence does not point to a suicide. "Candle For a Bag Lady" is a haunting story of a woman who chose to live on the streets despite having means, rewarding those that had touched her life after she had did. All in all, it is a very well done complement to a great series of novels. less
