review 1: I was somewhat indifferent after reading this short story. I understood it to be a flashback, but was left wondering how it would play into the next full-length novel (which, of course, was eventually answered in said novel).It seemed more plodding than most Reacher stories, with less action than that with which I've become accustomed. It was definitely more cerebral than physical.That said, it was still a Reacher book, so it's worth reading. I'm just glad I had his next novel already waiting in the wings.
review 2: This short story was... okay. Just okay, which when it comes to Reacher and Lee Child is a disappointment. No, it's probably not fair that we hold them to a higher standards than other authors are, however that's the price to pay for consistently ... moreputting out such quality works. The story itself was a clever little bit, but the emphasis here should be on little. It's incredibly short and feels lacking because of that. I don't love Reacher for one liners, I love him for the depth and his mentality and that's something that really can only be enjoyed over the longer haul. Learning how the gears in his head tick, trying to solve a mystery for yourself, and admiring the way that he brutally and pragmatically solves problems are all staples of the Reacher series. This short story lacks them. It has an interesting concept, however we never get any sense of attachment to the other characters in it, we don't get to see things from Reacher's view really, and the conclusion is very abrupt. I've enjoyed the other short stories so far, but this one really felt like it was just a teaser to remind people that the next Reacher book is coming out soon. less
