review 1: I heard about Stein through a link someone posted to Facebook about modern poets to watch. My library didn't have any of her poetry, but did have this slight, engaging novel. While I adored the homage to many favorite children's books, I failed to identify with the 20-something, living at home angst. Stein is clearly in love with words and images, and it seems to me that her poetry somehow peeks through her prose. The plot is sort of plotless and meandering, like the 20-something protagonist. I suspect that I'm going to like her poetry better than I liked this book.
review 2: I had a whole review of this written out that featured, among other things, a dig at Gary Shteyngart and the admission that I've never read the Chronicles of Narnia. Then it got deleted. S
... moreo basically, very funny and fairly relatable book that also features a bunch of astoundingly self-centered characters, some with better reasons than others. The protag claims to have realized that adulthood is not something that magically happens, that it's more like something that you stumble through, but she's having difficulties remembering that that applies to other people, too, and not just her. less

I liked the writing style and the story line but I thought the ending was disappointing.

I think this book will be better through the filter of Nostalgia or a blog.

Ho hum. I think I'm getting too old for these post-college angst books.
