review 1: I became intrigued by the author when he was featured as a character in Max Allan Collins novel "The Hindenburg Murders". Collins always includes some biographical data in this series which features mystery authors as the lead character in the novel - part of his disaster Series. The stories in this edition of "Enter the Saint" suffer, I believe, from both being quite dated but also the author's young age at the time he wrote them. This book also includes quite a bit of biographical data that still leave me interested in this author. I may well sample another offering from a period where he has matured.
review 2: Charteris has such a pleasing prose style that it is almost hard to give this book a mere two stars, but given the problems, does it really deserve m... moreore? In these early Saint books, this is the third, Simon Templar is the most obnoxious action hero in the history of obnoxious action heroes. Readers have to cope with that in two of the three stories in this collection. He barely appears in the third story, and that helps greatly. In his previous books, Templar is captured by his enemies. He is again here, twice, and his agent, the star of the third story, is captured in that tale. This is already a tired cliché of the series just three books in. The plots of the first stories seem very familiar, though the third seems fresher. Charteris has the sort of style that kept me reading to the end. What is read has little to recommend it. less
