The Courtships of Lancaster County
review 1: In Paradise, Pennsylvania, in the heartland of the Amish, Cate Miller is known more for her sharp tongue and fiery temper than her striking appearance. Her sweet and flirty sister, Betsy, on the other hand, seems to have attracted most of the bachelors in Lancaster County! But the sisters' wealthy father has made one hard-and-fast rule: older Cate must marry first, before younger Betsy can even start courting. Unfortunately, untamable Cate has driven away every suitor--until Pete Treger comes to town, that is. Prodded by the men of the area, Pete turns his attention to winning Cate's hand. But for the right reason? Cate hopes so.This is an interesting twist of The Taming of the Shrew meets the Plain Folk. I enjoyed the setting, circumstances and characters. The first half... more of the book was intriguing as the romance/hope blossomed, but it got a little PPM (poor pitiful me) in the back half until Cate started to grow up. I usually get a little upset when the angst of stories is lack of communication and misinterpreted perceptions. Sometimes I want to just yell "Talk to her/him - Be honest." But then what would I have to look forward to for resolution??
review 2: Wow, Cate was a feisty one! Poor thing snaps at everyone. I didn't really care for the story line in this book. Cate is so suspicious and defensive at first that nobody really likes her and I don't see how Pete could have been attracted to her. I also didn't care for the forced marriage between the two. I did, however, admire Cate's attitude and fortitude in the face of her circumstances after moving and her MIL's actions. The story flowed pretty smoothly so I wouldn't mind trying another of this author's books. less

This is a new telling of The taming of the Shrew. Likable characters and very clean romance.

It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great either. All in all I'm glad it was free.

Kind of like taming of the shrew - Amish style.
