review 1: Readable but pointless. I enjoyed the story to a point, it kept me reading, and there was nothing in the writer's style that bothered me - in fact she was quite literate - but I hesitated giving the book 3 stars because when I finished it I felt I had completely wasted my time. There were some good passages about what happens when a couple seems to go through an irreparable breach of their relationship, and the narrative kept me going, but it was unrewarding and many elements of the book (e.g., the Berlin Wall theme, the fat girl transformation) seem to have been thrown in for no other reason than to spice up the story. I can't say I didn't enjoy a lot of it, but I'm sorry I spent my time reading it instead of something more worthwhile.
review 2: The story has
... morean interesting premise about secrets between people that we think we know well. The plot twists kept my interest and the characters were well explored and believable. The author is known as writing "chick lit" and although this book has gotten wider readership, I give it 3 stars because it is just that. There is a tone to each character's voice that makes it more "Lifetime" than PBS. A fun, light read or beach book. March 2014 less
