review 1: This was a good read last weekend for a lazy saturday and sunday morning. Interesting story about a mother and wife (soon to be divorced), Alice, who falls at the gym and loses her memory. She was on the fast track of mommy life with her children in private school and being whisked away to a million activities..... and what happens in the book allows her to see her life as it was and what it should and could be.
review 2: I liked this book. It kept me listening, but it also got me thinking about my own 29 year old self and what she would think if she woke up in the middle of my current life. The characters are well-developed and interesting and the story unfolds with different perspectives, which left me guessing until the end. I could say I was fascinated
... moreand intrigued the whole time I listened. I enjoyed the theme of our evolving personalities and how our life circumstances all add up to who we are in the moment we are in. How every aspect of our history informs our communication with loved ones and how easy it is botch all that up. I felt the tool of amnesia was a wonderful one to use while playing with that theme. I haven't read anything like it before. However, I'm not sure I loved the ending. Seemed a little too trite, not very real, and way too easy - but I guess that's the point of fiction. Escape. Face conflict, then tie it all up in a neat bow. Life is never like that, though, so I get a little annoyed when writers choose that for their characters. I think the characters in What Alice Forgot were stronger than that - they could have survived an ending that didn't just hand them all their answers and dreams. I think Moriarty sold them short in the final chapters. less
