review 1: If all vampires were like Jake, they’d be a lot less problems. Now his brother Caleb is different story. Opps, this is his story. I think he’s worse that Kane. Kane had sort of an excuse for being aggressive and suspicious, he had a mission he wanted to accomplish. Caleb already was a sadistic, conceited jerk and just took it out on everybody that didn’t toe the line, especially women. Caleb is even more security conscious than Kane. Maybe because he’s not as powerful, so has something to make up for. But then he has a more open presence in the community, while Kane is a recluse. These vampires really have to take some anger management classes. Hating everybody just because a few bad people did something to someone they cared for is not remotely rig... moreht. They are so sanctimonious in their conviction that they are always right and everyone else is wrong. Leila’s an odd character. I like her, but not sure why. She’s very loyal to her family, but she’s very impulsive, doesn’t seem to have much sense or be able to think ahead. Caleb just takes advantage of that as he tries to force her to give him a reason to kill her. Like she says “dammed if I do and dammed if I don’t”. Quick Thoughts: 1 If all it takes is to have that symbol tattooed on yourself, why doesn’t all the Higher Order do it? A least those who know about it. 2)I can’t quite see the use of the benches of the dome in the context of vampires and Caleb’s lifestyle. Fave scenes: Caleb’s temper tantrum in the library, Leila trapping Caleb, Leila tying Caleb up in the old house and waiting for the phone call in the glass dome of roses.
review 2: I liked it, but it lacked a lot. The only thing going for Blood Roses is it explained about the prophecy more in depth. OTher than that, the story took place over maybe three or four days and had way to much internal monologue. The leading lady Leila was definitely stronger and better written than the previous book. She stood up for what she believed was good and wouldn't back down. Caleb had a lot of depth as well. His brooding and inability to move beyond past hurts was quite drawn out.Yet again, the plot was semi-predictable. And it ended on somewhat of a cliffhanger which was slightly irritating. The book was slow and had a few grammatical errors with misplaced words or words added in. There were times I had to put it down and walk away just because I was getting bored with the story. The pace needed to be faster and the author needs to seriously turn down the internal battles within the characters. It is just way to much and feels more like filler than adding to the story.I can't decide whether or not I want to read the third book. I'm just not impressed with the series. less
