review 1: Meh. There were intriguing parts of this book and the characters were all fleshed out and their problems seemed genuine and interesting (particularly the complexity of Siri and Jon's marriage). And the plot was strong enough to pull me along. But I never really connected to this book in a meaningful way. At the risk of upsetting Norwegians friends, I wonder if it isn't a cultural thing? My new favorite author is from warmer climes (Liane Moriarty-Australia) and I wonder if there isn't something a little "cold" (detached, remote, aloof) about this colder, Northern cultural which is keeping me at arms lengths from these characters? Worth the read for sure, but didn't love it.
review 2: This is a very odd book. It's not really a murder mystery, although ther
... moree is a murder, and there is a hunt for a body. From almost the beginning, the whodunnit question has already been answered. The rest of the book is devoted to the circumstances surrounding the event and is told (again and again) from the perspectives of various characters in the book. It hops around in the timeline and at times was a bit confusing. Sadly, I found most of the characters to be rather unlikeable and unsympathetic and when I finished the book I was just left with a feeling of "....huh. Well that's over." less
