review 1: The characters and the plot line were complex. All the characters were well fleshed out, but unlikeable. I found the author's use of different perspectives and shifting timelines, not as an over-used literary gimmick, but rather as a way to keep my interest and to heighten my understanding of the characters. I want to read more of her works! I will be recommending this book to the Good Reads community and my friends. Thank you, Washington Post for your recommendation.
review 2: Although this book has gotten terrific reviews I was not that taken by it. An unhappy couple (he a formerly well-reviewed author suffering writer's block, she a successful chef) has an even more unhappy daughter (and a younger one who never develops as a character.) A babysitter/n
... moreanny goes missing and the book revolves around her relationship with the family and her death (not a spoiler; we know she has died very early on.) This is a slow-moving novel that did not bore me but didn't really move me either. The descriptions of the natural world were probably what I liked the most. less
