review 1: This book sneaked up on me. For the first hundred pages or so, I was really involved, but I could have put it down. After that, there was no turning back. I found the story of Tim Blake’s search for his missing daughter – in indeed, simply the story of Tim Blake’s life – completely compelling. It’s the kind of book that keeps you up into the small hours, so best to read it when you don’t have to get up early…
review 2: In this suspenseful novel by Linwood Barclay, my first by the author, the hero/investigator/protagonist is not a policeman or a private eye, but an average guy car salesman. When Tim Blake's teenage daughter Sydney suddenly vanishes into thin air, nobody at the hotel where she said she's been working has ever heard of her and nobody
... more recognizes her picture. Suddenly Tim's life begins to unravel -- he can't find his daughter, his manager at the Honda dealership is on his case about his sales numbers, the police are suspicious of his story, his house is trashed while on a wild goose chase for Sydney in Seattle....and someone is trying to kill him. Tim is frantic and he can't find any answers. Just when you think it can't get any worse a second girl, Sydney's best friend, turns up missing. I usually prefer the plodding police procedural or gumshoe detective story, but this fast paced thriller captured my interest from the get-go and I intend to become a fan of Linwood Barclay. I've already picked up a copy of "Don't Look Away" and I hope it's just as compelling and surprising. less
