review 2: I read this whole thing in one sitting.
... more That doesn't happen very often with me. Fair enough, the only reason why I managed to read it all at once was because I was off school and ill, but it's still a sign of a very good book. This is the third Linwood Barclay book that I've read and I now also have No Time For Goodbye sitting on my pile of holiday books which I am very excited about. What I love about the way that Linwood Barclay writes is that although all his books are crime thrillers, the three that I've read have all been completely different. While I will admit that Fear The Worst was a bit more spectacular and unrealistic than his others, it was still very good. There were plenty of twists that I didn't see coming and one of the reasons why I managed to read the whole thing at once was because I had so many ideas about what was coming up and I wanted to find out what was really happening as soon as possible. I was absolutely hooked. My main criticism of this book is that it was a little bit crazy and that made it unrealistic to me. I realise that all crime novels are overdramatic because that's what makes them sell, but this one went a little over the top for me. I mean, a dramatic car chase in a Honda dealership with men with guns and fire? That was a little bit insane and as someone who appreciates books that are realistic that bothered me a little. However, I can't complain too much because all the drama kept me hooked. As I said, storylines that are overdramatic help to sell crime books because people read books for enjoyment and to escape reality. I'm just a little bit picky when it comes to realism in books and so I had to deduct a star for that even though I did love this book. Sorry.I need more Linwood Barclay books. I have one unread one on my pile and that isn't enough. I'm addicted because all of these books are so thrilling and surprising. Maybe they're not the most realistic, but I don't care. I like books with surprises around every corner and drama and good characters and an addictive plotline. When I finally decide to move away from YA for good (which I don't think is going to happen for a long time) I think crime thrillers might be my first port of call if they're all as good as this one. Someone please buy me more Linwood Barclay books right now. less
