review 1: I definitely enjoyed Delpit's latest book, although there wasn't a ton that was terribly new in terms of content. Delpit's style is clear and apparent, and readers of Delpit's Other People's Children will feel like they are in familiar territory. It's also pretty clear in reading the book that Delpit wrote this book, in part, as a response to the criticism that she received following the publication of Other People's Children - namely, that by calling for teachers of low-income students to emphasize the instruction of skills that high-income students obtain from home, Delpit was asking teachers to lower the rigor bar for low-income kids. I don't think this purpose hurts the book, but the purpose is certainly apparent. For new teachers, I think there is a lot to takeaway fro... morem Delpit's observations and recommendations, especially in her observations around the instruction of students with special needs. For more experienced teachers, there is a lot to be reminded of, but perhaps not a lot to learn. I found it rewarding to read it before my 5th year of teaching because it reminded me of what I once knew, and it certainly re-lit a fire.
review 2: This book provided just what I needed at this time which was some framing ideas, some paths to follow and the inspiration to stay strong as an educator. However, the book feels like it was rushed- a bit unpolished, a bit rough around the edges. I am left with some questions but I don't think that this is a bad thing. I just hope that I've gotten enough to help me find answers as my primary goal is to contribute to providing education to all our children. Also, because Delpit uses many anecdotes regarding the experiences with her daughter, I'd think it be cool to have some footnoted or epilogue style reflection from her daughter's perspective. I know that there are ideas I have about my daughters' educational experiences that they may be able to enhance by either agreeing or providing a whole different stance. less

Delpit forms a pretty convincing argument for underlying racism in our public education system.
