review 1: Well-written and non-preachy Christian fiction. The title character, May, is a somewhat unmoored, party-girl-type college student when she heads to Africa for a year following graduation. Her faith is revived as she experiences community in a Rwandan village, and she chooses to remain as the genocide approaches. The lone survivor of the village, she finally returns to the states where she spends the next several years recovering on a friend's farm while she experiences a resurrection all her own.
review 2: I really was enriched by this book. It's the story of a compassionate but not-religious young woman who went to Rwanda to help at a mission village, and was there caught up in the genocide when the Hutu's killed the Tutsis, and almost killed her. She wa... mores one of the only 2 Americans to live through the horror, and it scarred her terribly with PTSD. This book is an examination of how a gentle and caring old farmer is able to nurse her psyche back to equilibrium, as she gains her own strength to rejoin the human race as an interacting person.
