review 1: For months I have been picking up this book, reading the short description on the back and then putting the book back on the shelf. For months. Last week I finally decided to take it off the shelf and not put it back and I am SO glad I did! What a great book. Lisa Samson does a masterful job of telling the tales of redemption. And she doesn't shrink back from reality. I think sometimes Christian authors try to cloak the reality of life and Samson doesn't do that. She writes about it without apology and then shows the reader the way to redemption within it. This particular story of hurt and broken people is compelling because it also involves the principles of forgiveness. I have seen in my own life that redemption always involves forgiveness on some level. The main ... morecharacters of this story are intertwined unknowingly and while I figured it out pretty quick I wasn't put off by that, instead it compelled me to keep reading so that I could see the resolution. I'm always the most interested in how a story resolves and Samson doesn't disappoint. This is the second Samson book I have read and so far I am a big big big fan of her and her books!
review 2: Interesting book about how we can hide our true feelings behind a "mask" that we wear. I was shocked when I learned who Augustine and Valentine REALLY were - a little too convenient for my taste, but it worked for the story. I love the quote on p. 205: "We all walk around with some kind of shame we hide." Also learned something about dreadlocks - I didn't know they had to be maintained! I thought one just stopped combing their hair! Hee! Hee! less
