review 1: Finally I read the 1st in the series! Really enjoyed it and the set ups for the next 3 books. I love that this series runs concurrently and you see things happening at the same time in each book. This book has it all, ancient secret society, people with a "Gift" maybe second sight, or heightened senses etc. murder, love story, Victorian society, sex and great characters. Less stupid introspection of heroine than usual, tortured hero afraid to love who finally gives in, drugs, debauchery, cute children, read this 1st though. I am on to number 4 today!
review 2: When I pick up a book by Liz Carlyle I know I'm going to love it. This book was no exception. It was filled with the expected romance along with a murder mystery and a surprising mix of the Scottish sigh... moret and Indian mysticism, but of course takes place in London. The author writes her characters so well you think they could actually be real people you might meet yourself. She also has a way with writing familial and fraternal relationships that are full and realistic. I look forward to reading the next book in the St. James Society books, of which this is the first (I believe) to see who she chooses as the centerpiece of that novel. less
