review 1: Without a doubt, those who are fans and followers of Lorelei James and her Rough Rider characters will be thrilled with this update on some of our favorites. Here is an author who has never backed away from dealing with thorny and edgy social issues and whose characters speak their mind and follow their own paths. So it is with Iraqi conflict veteran Cam McKay and the persistent PTSD issues he faces. This is one of those stories that will bring all of us back into his life with his now greatly expanded family. And you've just gotta love his spouse--gutsy lady that she is. And then there is the issue of triad relationships, homosexuality, and how does one deal with those issues when one's kids are the objects of social scorn? Ms James handles that issue here with verv... moree and sensitivity while expanding on Trevor, Edgard, and Chassie's relationship after nearly a decade together. Finally there is the update on Jack and Keely, the lone female in the original McKay line-up and a woman whose life has always been a demonstration of a curious conglomeration of family loyalty, sharp wit and keen intelligence, all mixed up with spit, vim, vigor, and vitality. Match that with the sparks that have always flown between her and Jack and now four years after the wedding, the advent of family and babies, and pregnancy hormones, and the love that doesn't seem to go away. It's a great anthology and one that is fun to read and so very neat to catch up on some of the folks that Ms James' fans have truly come to love. Each of the stories includes more of those incidents and moments when all of us wish these intrepid McKays and their relatives were a part of our real lives. Just one truly fantastic read.
review 2: **Contains Sort of Spoilers**This book of short stories updating the reader on 3 story lines from the Rough Riders series was in a word, Perfect. Now, I may be a bit biased as two of the three stories feature my favorite characters, but any fan of the series should be over the moon with this fun glimpse into the lives of the McKay's, Glanzer's and Donohue's.The First Story Features Cam and Domini and honestly reflects common thought processes of War heroes that are thrust back into society. It is graphic and heart breaking and honest. I think any fan of Cam, Domini and their kids will love this story. I have always loved the fact that the adopted kids of Cam and Domini's are not looked at as any different than the children that are related by blood. The McKays constantly show a progressive outlook on family and that all family is rooted in one thing...love.The second Story was my favorite but that is only because I am a sucker for Trevor. I have always loved the Glanzer's since you first meet Trev and Ed in LHR. The struggle that they are constantly faced with, just to love, is heart breaking and beautiful. Especially once you see where they are now and how no matter what relationship you are in, it takes work. The first page of this story put chills up my spine. I hate the fact that a small boy surrounded daily with so much love and support and honest people is faced with any sort of negativity regarding his home life. I was also deeply touched that Trev takes it so hard, because his son was born into it, it is not a choice he made. But alas, I wish every child's biggest issue was that they were surrounded by soo much love. Now, don't get me wrong, this is not a sad story, it is just a real story about societal norms. But in good ol' Lorelei James Fashion, this story is smokin' hot. The Chassie Glanzer is one lucky lady and that gets proven..over ...and over...and over. Lucky Lucky Chassie. The Last Story features my second favorite McKay couple Keely and Jack. There is just something about Alpha Jack and stubborn Keely that I love and I think that the way Keely is written in pregnancy is perfect. She is a nightmare pregnant woman, but doesn't see that at all, which is Keely to a T'. Any it is only fitting that they have back to back girls that you know will be hell on wheels. I love that they were trying so hard to get pregnant in Gone Country and then after Piper they end up with 4 kids in 2 years...I love it! It is so balls to the wall, Donohue style. Also, the love and joy and panic and dominance that comes from Jack is sexy as hell. This story is the perfect way to get the readers what they want, more Keely and Jack and the crazy that comes with it.As for the reader who called Lorelei's female character's "brood mares"... Who are you to take away the choice that these woman are making to have large loving families? The pregnancies/lives these woman have are not all fun and games. Domini can't have children so she gives 6 kids a warm loving family. You find out that their are miscarriages and difficult pregnancies and Jack even puts his foot down after the twins are born. Colt and Indy stopped at 2 because they say that is enough for them... so stop the judgement. If you want 1 or 0 child households in an erotic/romance story...write your own. Lorelei James keeps her characters consistent throughout the entire series. Something I appreciate and look forward to in many more stories. less
