review 1: *This is more a 3.5 stars - it's more than a 3 but I don't think it merits a 4*I actually quite liked this book, despite the less than favourable reviews that discouraged me on purchase. Yes, the romance was laid on a bit thick, but I hadn't read a YA paranormal romance in a while, so I almost enjoyed all the sighing and heartracing and accidental finger touching. And hey, no love triangle!!I don't think the book's pace was slow, so much as misplaced. The first half of the book is a slow build, which I think is necessary as the world is quite complicated and needed to be explained. However, when contrasted with the amount that is crammed into the second half, it can seem a bit jarring. I also felt this was a fault of plot - the book seemed to take a lot of YA staples: the ... morequest for a loved one, a tournament based on fighting to the last-one-standing, a dystopian/fantasy society and a character with special powers on unknown origin that needs to be discovered. It went in a lot of directions, and should have just stuck with one of them. The tournament especially felt incredibly superfluous, I would have much preferred seeing the inner workings of the court rather than a forced Hunger Games scenario (or perhaps it was borrowing more heavily from Throne of Glass).I liked the personifications of Famine, Conquest, Death etc. They were probably the most original part of the book. One the whole it wasn't particularly groundbreaking, but I had fun reading it.
review 2: I liked this book. However, i completely understand some of the less enthusiastic reviews. What is told in the description is minimal to the human story that unfolds. This is not a tale of fantasy and magic, lands of undiscovered depths. This is a coming of age tale, a story of a girl who is trying to figure out who and what she is. There is magic, and mystery but it takes a back seat the the human qualities of the characters of the book. less
