review 1: Emotionally and physically abused Laura Kensington decides to leave her husband of three years after devising an elaborate escape plan. Once she is ready to put her plan into motion, the unthinkable occurs. Her abusive husband, Patrick Kensington, is found dead of an apparent heart attack. Fearing for the safety of her unborn child, she vows not to let her husband’s conniving mother try to take away her baby in order to carry on the social status of the Kensington name. At the hospital to identify her husband’s body, Laura finds comfort in an older doctor who had previously treated her for injuries sustained at the hands of her abuser. Even though she made mention on all occasions that she was not being abused, Dr. Josh Samuels knows otherwise. He aids Laura... more in fleeing her situation safely by sending her to a ranch in Evers, Texas, owned by his friend May Bishop. Once she settles in at the ranch, Laura slowly opens up to one of May’s sons named Cade. He is a handsome, kind-hearted man who rescues abused animals. His brother Shane is a local lawyer. The entire town feels indebted to May Bishop due to her generous donations and giving nature in general. This sense of loyalty plays a large part in the novel’s story line. Because of Laura’s status in society, the small town of Evers is curious as to why she has been brought to the ranch, but their devotion to the Bishop family outweighs their questions. While Laura is adjusting to her new life, she is being sought after by her husband’s family and his business partner Alec Hall. Alec wants to find any incriminating evidence that may have been given to Laura by Patrick regarding any illegal dealings between the two men. At this point, the story takes several suspenseful twists and turns that include private investigators, lies, and betrayal. This is my first novel to read by Lori Ryan. It is a fast, clean read that exemplifies the harsh realities of espousal abuse in a very well–written professional manner. I hurt for Laura’s character when she first arrived at the ranch, and I cheered for Cade in his soft, devoted approach to soothe Laura and enter her life. The secondary characters in this novel are a wonderful addition to the faithfulness of the Bishop family as well as add to the suspense of what the Kensington family has planned for Laura. Lori Ryan is an author I expect to hear more from in the future. I recommend Ever Hopeful and look forward to reading the next instalment in the series. Great job, Ms. Ryan! You kept me on my toes throughout this novel.
review 2: WOW - what a great book! There are a lot of books out that focus on spousal abuse, but this story has such a unique escape plan and road to healing. Loved and was rooting for Laura right from the start. Her strength just shines through on so many occasions. Even when her body and spirit were broken, she didn't just whine about it, she took positive steps to move forward. The symbolism between her and the "broken" animals was just so masterfully presented. And OMG Cade - what a Keeper! The plot twists and turns as the suspense builds, yet underneath it all is a compassionate, sweet, fall in Love romance. Really liked the secondary characters - great overall development of each of their roles. This was my first book by Lori Ryan - so glad I found her! Can't wait to read the next book in the series!PS: LOVED the Epilogue!!!!!!! less
