review 1: A tricky one this. I chose to read this book now to tie in with the commemorations of the start of WW1. Whilst I realised that it wouldn't make pretty reading, I found some of the level of detail, especially in the hospital, almost impossible to read. Knowing that Louisa Young's grandmother, who worked in the hospital at Sidcup, was interesting and explained why she was so keen to share the information she had. I would have preferred some more tradition and less contrived back stories - I struggled to feel any empathy for some of the smaller characters as they seemed very one dimensional.
review 2: Wow I love it when a book comes along and literally makes me unable to put in down. Must admit that when I first started the book I thought it was going to be a glos
... moresy, romanticised account of life during WW1, but thankfully it wasn't. Starting in 1907 the book follows the life of Riley Purefoy a boy from a humble beginnings, and his friendship with Nadine Waveney a girl from a more affluent background. The book looks at Class divisions, societies expectations and the devasting effects of WW1 on every social class. The horrific injuries sustained by soldiers is also explored, both physically and mentally, making this book a very thought provoking read. I will definitely be reading more of Louisa Young's work. less
