review 1: This was an effective but low-key little thriller. Given the subject matter it could have been much more wide-ranging but there is no problem with its not being so. I recall - but cannot find - a thriller from the 1980s (I think) in which a deadly virus was being transmitted sexually (and no, it wasn't "Cities of the Red Night"! It was by Tom Clancy or someone like that). That was the James Bond worldspanning approach and this novel has the other end of the range of possibilities, focussing down on a small group of people affected. As often happens I felt the main villain was a more interesting character than the others -- this is not unique to this novel and not something that is really a problem, as after all the antagonist is the one who is stepping outside normality, h... moreowever the other characters do have to find the ability to take control within themselves.
review 2: A chance meeting on a London street take virologist Dr Kate Maddox back to a traumatic event in her life. She can't remember it clearly, but needs to as the past catches up with her and the world is at risk from a deadly virus. I was going to say it's a bit far fetched, but today's news headlines are all about the worst Ebola outbreak ever in West Africa an how the NHS is on the lookout for cases in the UK. less
