review 1: I listened to this audio version of Salt Bride by Lucinda Brant as a direct result of an excellent review by a trusted Goodreads friend and I was not disappointed. I doubt that I could say much more about the events than have already been said by Caz, as her review is entertaining and very thorough. Her comments re the narrator, Marion Hussey are spot on. Ms. Hussey's voice range is extensive, never leaving the listener in any doubt about which character is speaking at any given time, even when there are many characters involved, she has a pleasant, melodious voice and pitches it perfectly for male/female/young and old, and is especially good at portraying Lady Diane St.John, a veritable Cruella Deville, sinister, manipulative and delusional. My few niggles, and they are fe... morew, are centred around the relationship between Jane Despard and the Earl of Salt Hendon, "Salt" to his contemporaries. Their initial betrothal is halted by a series of misunderstanding and manipulations, when they eventually, four years later, do marry, Salt has been under the impression that Jane has been under the protection" of his hated adversary, Jacob Allenby. "Under protection", implies to me that they have been living together, with Jane as Allenby's mistress, perhaps I have misinterpreted this. Later, after Salt has finally married Jane, he indicates he believes she has only ever had relations with himself, unless I have missed this, I don't recall this subject actually being mentioned between them. The other point which I found slightly irritating, are the circumstances surrounding the baby Jane miscarried four years previously but which she never discusses with Salt. I realise that the story hinges on this secret and I would give too much of this, otherwise captivating story away, if I were to say what has niggled me. Notwithstanding the foregoing this was an enthralling story. Not normally a lover of the Georgian era....I find the men's fashions foppish, wigs, powdered hair, lace, diamond buckles and high heels...Lucinda Brant's descriptions are highly entertaining and she manages to portray the fops in a droll and humorous manner without compromising the appearance of the tall, handsome Salt, who although he wears most of these fashions, doesn't come across as effeminate in any way.The research into the politics of the day is impressive in a detailed and knowledgeable fashion, altogether a cleverly written novel with many twists and turns and much interesting detail. I was highly entertained to the point where I was unable to stop listening, no one got a word out of me for hours! Thanks Caz, my first Lucinda Brant and definitely not my last. Her polished, classy style is very much to my taste, so much so that I have already downloaded the sequel to this refreshingly different tale. Despite the niggles I spoke of...for pure entertainment value...I have awarded 5 stars, as it is definitely nearer to 5 than 4. Bring on Diana, I can hardly wait!
review 2: Got halfway through the book but dropped it because I hated the stupidity. The villain was way so obvious in her viscous-ness but not a single person could pick up on any of her evil ways- not the child abuse, or the servant abuse, or the way she played with the lives of the hero and heroine. The hero was so hot and cold I got whiplash from the back and forth of his actions. The heroine was a doormat for the entire time I've read it and that's what really annoyed me the most. This novel had all the elements of a very dramatic story, or at least a melodramatic soap opera.. But the annoying characters got in the way. less
