review 1: I fell in love with this book. Brandt writes beautifully, her characters are a rich tapestry of the 18 th century. Witty, deep, this is as satisfying as a cozy fire, glass of wine and the best piece of chocolate you can find. The characters have wonderfully different voices, the history is part of the plot and you feel that you've been plopped down into another time. Don't read this if you have something important to do. Be prepared to take a break from the world, shut down and enjoy times long past.
review 2: Talk about a book I simply could not put down! I found myself even carrying it around in the kitchen to read while I cooked. Lucinda Brant weaves mystery, suspense, and humor into an evolving, passionate romance. Mademoiselle Antonia's sincerity and ungua... morerded openness slowly melt and consume the hardened heart of Monsieur le Duc of Roxton until no one matters in his life as much as Antonia. One could very roughly compare them to Beauty and the Beast. Not only is the plot clever, complex, and irresistibly engaging; the prose and dialogue are brilliant. I marvel that so much excellence could be incorporated into one book. I hope to see Ms. Brant rise to the full notoriety she deserves. If you are a hardcore English historical fiction fan, then you will absolutely love this and other books by Lucinda Brant less
