review 2: I generally shy away from crime book ever since reading Stieg Larson's work, the brutality and bloody imagery set me into a squeamish fit which I couldn't really stomach. I love crime tackling procedure story, especially the stories which follows the main character's thoughts as they reach into conclusion, so after checking goodread's recommendation upon thi
... mores book, I bought it and left loving every page of it.Faye's prose was smart, delectable and I enjoy the flash language Irish New Yorker use along the book. Having an experience living in Scotland give me a joy in reading how this thievery language gained historical context and 'ancient' practical use.The character's insightful view of the 1840's social up heal was also a refreshing point which I enjoy. Though it might come across as too-good-to-be-true but it fits the picture of the first star copper in the blazing criminal city of New York. High in moral and close with the lower society.I love how Timothy and Val seems like two side of a different coin, a charming politician with less than good escapism habit and an honest observer with a perchance of heroic bone. It's nice to read this warm and working sibling relationship. I adore my brother so I might be biased but this family setting really works for me. The short chapter where Val admit how he's solely responsible for the fire which killed their parents, followed by Timothy's rise to start understanding him was my deal broker to love this book.I also enjoy how Faye describe the social discrepancy between the immigrants. It strike a chord which made us question how long we should prejudice the people which we never knew before? New York being a city of immigrants, and hating the immigrants shows how hypocrite human could be. The historical context does explain it by stating the famine, economy imbalance and religion rift, thus it really made me wonder will this kind of rivalry ever end. In a way it really shows how even if we thought we're socially and morally superior from the people back at 1800, we're still the same kind of people who judge by the box we live in.It's a good read which intrigued my mind. The crime scenes were also grotesque but I could stomach it better than the Girl in Dragon Tattoo series. It also proves to be a good choice to bring out child prostitution into the story. Many people rather opt to ignore such crime, but having it stated like this makes it important to understand how this kind of crime has a historical and social context. Frightening but it explains why such trade exist and how a stargazer could fall into that line of work. less
