Timothy Wilde Mysteries
review 1: Great read for fans of New York-based historical fiction. In the same vein as Caleb Carr's THE ALIENIST and THE ANGEL OF DARKNESS, and Erik Larson's THE DEVIL IN THE WHITE CITY; if you've enjoyed those books, you'll love this one as much as I did. I carried it with me and read it ever chance I got. Vivid descriptions of 1840's New York, so clear you can almost smell the streets and feel the claustrophobic conditions most of the residents lived in. An intimate description of the infancy of New York's finest and the life of copper star Timothy Wilde.
review 2: Set in NYC during the mid 1840s, this historical fiction/mystery is a well-written, well-researched page turner. The narrator is Tim Wilde, an orphaned American who becomes one of the first "coppers" as
... morethe first organized police force for the city is formed. NYC is a brutal, gritty place with growing pains. Ms Faye has done an admirable job of research and used the information to create a gripping story. The forces battling for power in the growing metropolis include the Democratic party machine (Tim's brother Val is a force within), Protestant clergy, the Catholic church, Irish immigrants and blacks, the medical establishment, the lawless and the law-abiding, to name a few. When a mass grave filled with children's corpses is discovered, the plot becomes even more complicated. I am happy to have stumbled upon this book. I plan to read more by Ms Faye and follow Tim's future exploits. less

Good book. Take it slow. Hard to comprehend the English of the 1850s.
