review 1: I gobbled this one up, despite in retrospect not really being that great of a story at times. The author spills A LOT of ink on unrelated, concurrent news events, like the heat wave of 1911, but his wry & witty make it worth it. The book does raise some questions that I didn't think were fully addressed, like why the investigation was primarily begun & conducted by the newspaper instead of law enforcement, or why Dr. King (the town medical examiner & Archer's personal doctor) was not under closer scrutiny, and why exactly he was so clueless. But all in all, I'm up for reading more of Phelps' books about female serial killers.

... moretill there today. My father and aunt knew several of the characters. It's the story of the deadliest female serial killer of all time, right here in Windsor. When an editor from the Courant notices that there are constant deaths to write up in the paper of the residents there, suspicions arise. Could be more suspenseful, but I tore through it and enjoyed it thoroughly. less

This book kept me interested...since it happened only 30 miles from home.
