review 1: The creative team behind Extra Yarn comes together again to feature two characters, Sam and Dave, who dig a hole in search of something spectacular. Right beneath their feet readers can see a large diamond, but the digging path they take eventually veers off in twists and turns that lead them far from the treasure. Once they fall asleep, a fearless dog that has been accompanying them starts digging, finds a bone, and they end up falling through the hole. It's a good thing, too, since I'm not the only reader that must have wondered how they would ever manage to get out of that very deep hole. The ending is fun to discuss since the house to which they return has a cat with a different colored collar, a different flower, and a different weather vane, leading me to think they'... moreve emerged on the other side of the world. The digital and colored pencil illustrations will surely have readers guessing about just what happened while the text and the illustrations will remind readers of some of their own childhood adventures. Didn't we all ambitiously dig a hole and wonder if we could make our way through the soil all the way to China?
review 2: I...don't think I get it. I love Jon Klassen and will happily read anything he illustrates, and I was with him until the last few pages...and then he lost me. Are they in a parallel universe? That's pretty spectacular I guess. Would a kid understand what just happened? Is the point for us not to understand? Are we supposed to imagine? SOMEONE EXPLAIN THIS BOOK TO ME. For real, please enlighten. I'll be so appreciative, even if it turns out I missed something really obvious and I'm stupid. less
