review 1: Powers, the man who helped Mary (in previous novel) deal with her opium addiction has himself fallen into the arms of the drug. His father has had him committed and has foiund a nurse who has had success with others in the same predicament. Margaret is an Irish woman, who grew up during the Famine. Her father, an Irish earl, tried to get the English Parliament to help and when they did not, he gave everything the family had to help. When her parents died, she went to the Crimea and was a nurse; now she helps those with addiction and PTSD. When Powers' father asks that she marry him and keep him well, she refuses, but changes her mind when her younger brother shows up in London. A radical, he is in trouble and she tries to protect him with the marriage. The book follow... mores Powers' journey to life again, gradually finding a way to live without opium, although the craving doesn't disappear. There is some hartbreak in the story but it is not as dark as the two previous books. It was good to see Powers as he should be, and not as he appeared previously. He deserved happiness.
review 2: Another great installment in the Mad Passions series. I love how each one has a little different feel, so it doesn't get old, but Claremont's writing style still just draws you in. This time the main character is a man, which is different, but he's no stranger. We met Viscount James Powers in the last book. This story covers his own struggle with opium addiction and generally coming to terms with the deaths of his wife and child. Of course, he's helped along the way by his stunning Irish nurse/wife Margaret. How she becomes his wife and how she pulls him out of the pit of despair is quite an emotional tale. I love how Claremont takes you on an emotional roller-coaster, and somehow, she makes you care about the characters from page one. less
