review 1: This was my first novel by Maire Claremont and it was an entertaining book. It is the story of Eva, a widow who through terrible circumstances is locked away in a madhouse. When her childhood friend comes home from the war, he is shocked to find her locked up. Once he rescues her, they both have to confront their own demons if they want to have al ife together or risk being torn apart forever.While I liked the story, I think everything was wrapped up very quicklyat the end. Two-thirds of the book focused on Eva's first couple months afterher escape. The last third was hurried, trying to wrap the story up.Overall this was a good story and I will be reading the second in the series.
review 2: As the tile suggests, this is a very dark, emotional story of two ... morepeople who have lost so much, but are trying to find their way. Eva, Ian and Hamilton had been raised together-life-long friends. While Eva and Ian were in love, but duty requires Eva to marry Hamilton. It is after their marriage that Hamilton goes to serve in India and Ian goes along, to protect his friend. Three years later, Jamilton is dead, their son is dead, and Eva in an insane asylum. Ian is devastated to find her plus discovering she is an addict. THeir journey back is fraught with terror, guilt and the devastation the loss of friends and a child brings. less
