review 1: Vinland Saga is a dark tale of revenge about a young boy who loses his father and joins the band responsible until such time as he can finally avenge his father. This book is rated Older Teen and contains very realistic violence and gore(like a panel with an arrow pulled form an eye socket with the eye still on the shaft) so if that sort of thing bothers you i would suggest you avoid this series. Also I should probably mention since this book is about vikings that if it is in anyway accurate to historical information then there might be sexual encounters considering they spread themselves across the known world. The story starts not with how the boy Thorfinn got to be the man he is but a conflict as one army tries to infiltrate a fortress. This part of the story shows the r... moreeckless bravery of Thorfinn and the skills of the people the people he is working with. Victorious the group returns home with the spoils of war and Thorfinn gets his reward when he is given a chance to fight the group leader Askeladd. Next we finally get a better idea of what makes Thorfinn tick as we travel to a simpler time when he knew the legendary viking explorer Leif Erickson. It is a terrible tale that stole the innocence of a youth and made him a man far to soon/Considering the Vinland Saga is being released as an omnibus I would like to tell you my favorite part of either half of the book. FOr the beginning of the book I would have to say my favorite part is when ASkeladd and his men are leaving the scene and calls out to the Frankish lord they agreed to help. In the second half of the book there is a moment of sacrifice that sets THorfinn on his dark path that is powerful and moving. It shows the true strength of not only a warrior but a man dedicated to his home.
review 2: Wow. I'm not sure exactly what I was expecting with Vinland Saga, but what I *got* was a bloody, dark and intense story about the price of peace, the need for vengeance and the sort of person you might need to be to survive in a world of war and death. Our main character works for a man he has sworn to kill, and bloodily ends anyone he has to toward that end. but how and why he got to that point is the bulk of this book - a tale about parental love, about responsibility, about when to fight and when not to. It was so engaging that I devoured it in one sitting. The art is clean and easy to follow. The characters are complex and likeable. And this may be the first thing that made me want to go learn more about the historical vikings instead of just sitting back and being content with the weird Americanized cinema vikings I'm familiar with. less
