review 1: Beautifully-drawn manga, reminds me of Berserk with a tad less gore and, so far, no sex. The story follows Thorfinn, who grew up in Iceland listening to stories about the legendary Vinland--a new world not bound by the slavery and war of the old--but who spent the past several years being raised by the Viking band that killed his father, waiting for his chance to kill their wily leader in revenge. Action is mixed with some very well-done (and not over-done) moments of thought and character development that really flesh out the people and world being portrayed. Feels a bit sanitized, as I find Japanese historical mangas tend to feel, but I look forward to seeing how it grows.
review 2: Reading the first volume of Vinland Saga is the beginning of a journey almost
... more as epic as the one embarked upon by the story's fiery protagonist, Thorfinn, and one that you won't soon regret. A ruthless killer, this Viking named Thorfinn might not be what he seems: Presently a warrior in Askeladd's band of Viking mercenaries, Volume One of Vinland Saga will take you ten years into the past to discover his origin story! Why has he become such a cold-blooded killer, where is his family, and how did his complicated relationship with Askeladd and his band of mercenaries come to pass?! All this and more will be revealed as you revel in the masterful artwork of Makoto Yukimura-sensei. less

It's a really good historical manga about vikings. Not sure if it's as good as Planetes yet.

A terrific historical manga, filled with vivid details and a hell of a story.

Toller Zeichenstil, aber die Story war mir zu gewalttätig.
