review 1: Meticulously researched, a good plotline with loads of action and a sympathetic character: The perfect hallmarks for a great historical fiction read. Sira, the main character, basically gets destroyed at the beginning of the book and left in Morocco close to the beginning of the Spanish Civil War with a huge debt and no one to turn to. By luck and her own skill, she manages to set up shop in Tetouan and befriend imporant people that put her on the path of becoming a spy and a fierce and capable woman in her own right. I love how the textures and the life patterns are desribed in her years in Morocco and the frantic, anxious feel of Madrid and Lisbon when Sira comes back to play the spygame against the Germans trying to set up shop in Spain during WWII. Great book and an in... moreformative one too, since it gives a more comprehensive picture of what the Iberian peninsula was like under Franco and the influence of the Falangists in the region.
review 2: Es un libro muy interesante, por momentos se vuelve un poco insípido pero siempre logró retomar al instante mi atención. Me gustó mucho la otra cara de la moda que mostró, en la cual deja de ser algo "frívolo" para, de hecho, poder cambiar el curso de la historia. IN YOUR FACE, HATERS!El final fue totalmente adecuado para el libro, quitándole la importancia al futuro real de sus protagonistas, para darle luz a la historia en sí. A mí, particularmente, me hubiese gustado saber qué fue de la vida de Sira y Marcus, de su madre y padre, Candelaria, etc.. por simple chuchería. Me hubiese gustado un reencuentro con Ramiro, una revancha, pero tal vez eso no era necesario. A mi parecer, el libro muestra una constante lucha entre el pasado y el presente; logra mostrar de manera periódica y realista cómo las vidas, elecciones y personalidades de sus personajes van transformándose a lo largo de la historia, de las subidas y bajadas del destino. Es un libro sobre lucha y supervivencia. less
