review 1: Main character Blanca Piera leaves her job as a college professor in Madrid and heads to a small university in St. Cecelia, CA to give herself space to recover from her husband's infidelity and their divorce. Her new job is to research the life of a writer and professor, exiled from Spain, who's legacy is important to the school.Pros: 1)It's unusual to find books that illustrate the impact of the Spanish Civil war on every day people, it is a fresh story line. 2) The professor's effects are in shambles, Blanca has the job of setting things to rights. For some reason,these kinds of projects in books can be highly pleasing and it is here: she is dusty, creative, determined, sometimes even forgetting meals in order to get the job done. 3)It is nice to live the life of an ... moreextremely intelligent Spanish woman starting a new life in CA for a little while. 4) This is a complex, layered story taking place in Spain past and present as well as CA. Readers will likely feel more informed about the world after this book.Cons: 1) It is too darned long at times. The thoroughness of the story derails the drive of the story. 2) See number one. 3) Ditto. This is a real problem in terms of my personal enjoyment and feeling confident of suggesting this book to another reader.
review 2: I so enjoyed "The time In Between" by Maria Duenas that I've eagerly been waiting for her second novel "The Heart Has Its Reasons." For several weeks, I've been trying to like this novel. Today, halfway through the book, I am worn out trying to follow the confusing flashbacks interspersed throughout the main story. The writing is good. However, it seems to me that, this time, the author has tried to weave together too many threads. I won't be finishing this novel. less
